On November 13, The Fortune Society’s Food and Nutrition program hosted its annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Academy, also known as the Castle, with support from a group of dedicated volunteers. The event was a vibrant gathering that brought together staff and residents to share in the spirit of gratitude and community.
Each year, the Food and Nutrition program invites residents of both the Castle and Castle Gardens to enjoy a delicious free holiday meal. This cherished tradition fosters a sense of belonging and togetherness among the Fortune community, allowing participants to connect, share stories, and celebrate the season in a warm and welcoming environment.
Mary volunteered to help prepare and serve food to the residents. She was joined by four other members of her church community, where Michael, a Transitional Specialist Coordinator with Health Services at Fortune, is the pastor. Each holiday season, members of their church volunteer at soup kitchens, host coat and toy drives and donate food and other items to give back to the community.
Mary is passionate about giving back to others in any and every way she can. This year, she was delighted to serve members of the Fortune community, especially alongside other members of her church. Mary shared that the event was a great success. Although she spent much of her time behind the scenes in the kitchen, Mary enjoyed connecting with staff and residents and found joy in every interaction.
Mary is grateful for the opportunity to volunteer alongside so many dedicated members of the Fortune community, and she looks forward to returning next year. For her and many others, giving back during the holiday season is a cherished tradition that brings people together, strengthens community ties and exemplifies the true spirit of the season.
Mary shared that, while this was her first time volunteering with Fortune, she felt welcomed right away by the staff and participants. The event was lively and full of gratitude, and this positive energy created an even more positive experience.
“The staff and community members made me feel very comfortable,” Mary shared. “They were very friendly, so it was a positive experience for me.”
Volunteers like Mary and her church group play an essential role in advancing Fortune’s mission. Their generous contributions and time help us continue serving our community, especially during the holiday season. As we reflect on this year’s celebration, we encourage others to join us in making a difference. Whether through volunteering, donating or simply spreading kindness, every act of service strengthens the bonds that hold our community together.
