The 2024 TCS NYC Marathon is less than two weeks away, and John is gearing up to run with the Fortune Flyers in this year’s race!
Running is a central part of John’s life as a form of exercise, therapy, and enjoyment. He ran his first marathon in 2016 and participated in the Los Angeles Marathon earlier this year. Now, having recently moved to NYC, John looks forward to being surrounded by friends and family and integrating himself into the city community.
“Seeing all the people lining the streets, they are smiling and rooting for strangers,” John explained. “Even the people running the marathon, I see them helping others running beside them, pushing them forward and cheering for them. It’s inspiring how everyone comes together in this very communal event. It speaks to our collective generosity of spirit, kindness, and compassion that we show each other.”
John decided to run with the Fortune Flyers after hearing about the organization from his mom, Wendy, a longtime volunteer at The Fortune Society. Working with Employment Services as a mock interview volunteer, Wendy has witnessed firsthand the potential of our participants and how Fortune helps our clients succeed.
John has found a unique purpose through philanthropy. As a member of AA, John prioritizes service and giving back to others in his community. He speaks monthly with patients at a local hospital about mental health and healing from a substance use disorder, and he is grateful to share his experiences with others in hopes of making an impact on their lives.
Public speaking has become an integral part of John’s life, allowing him to share his story and learn from the people he meets. He hopes to speak at sober living houses and, eventually, jails and prisons.
“I think that was a component that was missing from my life for a long time, and it’s missing from society in general. We, as human beings, are communal creatures. It’s empowering to think that you’ve done even one thing to positively impact someone else.”
Ahead of this year’s marathon, John has been excited to share Fortune’s mission with friends and family. While fundraising, he has taught those in his inner circle more about our work and its impact on the community.
“I’m explaining the mission of Fortune, and that opens people up to the problems the organization exists to address. These are important issues, and when I message my friends to donate, I also teach them about Fortune.”
John can’t wait to run in support of Fortune in this year’s marathon! Support John and the rest of the Fortune Flyers by helping them reach their goal of $50,000 by November 3!
