At The Fortune Society, our dedicated case managers serve and connect participants with vital resources to address their needs during reentry. They work closely with participants, conducting regular check-ins and providing support throughout their reentry journeys.
Kayla joined Fortune’s staff almost six years ago as a case manager at the Fortune Academy (the Castle) and is a valued community member. Growing up with a parent who is formerly incarcerated, she brings a unique perspective to her role. Kayla witnessed firsthand the overwhelming impact of the criminal legal system, so she understands the barriers our participants face when coming home.
After almost six years at Fortune, Kayla has become attuned to participants’ overlapping needs. She recognizes that after incarceration, individuals often face challenges while learning to navigate systems like the housing application process, the job search, and benefits applications. Understanding how overwhelming the reentry process can be, Kayla helps participants prioritize their needs and develop an effective plan for success.
“I’m very hands-on and I try to help them feel less stressed here,” Kayla said. “If they want to send in an application for something, I can help them start that process. I’ll support them during follow-ups and check that they’re keeping up with things. I remind them that we all need a little bit of therapy and support at times, and that’s okay.”
Kayla also emphasized the importance of being flexible and giving participants freedom during their time at Fortune. Although she refers participants to Fortune’s programs and services, Kayla ensures her clients maintain their autonomy to make decisions about their goals at Fortune.
“I let them know about the services we have here, but I put the choice in their hands,” Kayla explained. “It all depends on their needs, and they know themselves best. I’m also flexible when I meet with them. We have our weekly check-ins, but they let me know when they can meet, and they keep me updated if we need to reschedule.”
Kayla has developed positive relationships with both participants and other staff members. She appreciates working in an environment that prioritizes community and building lasting relationships.
Throughout the year, Kayla remains involved with the Fortune community by attending events like the annual Victor Rojas Block Party and the Thanksgiving meal at the Castle. This holiday season, she reflects on the value of this community and the family she has found at The Fortune Society.
