Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

11/20/2023

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, our staff at Fortune compiled a list of resources including books, movies and TV shows and curated a Spotify playlist for you to enjoy.

LEARN THE HISTORY

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed a joint resolution into law, naming November Native American Heritage month, at the time called National American Indian Heritage Month. This proclamation followed over 70 years of efforts to acknowledge and celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Native American people.

November was chosen to honor Native Americans because the month marked the end of the traditional harvest season, and is historically a time of celebration for many Native American tribes.

During Native American Heritage Month, schools, museums and cultural organizations choose to celebrate and honor Native Americans with various social gatherings, educational events, exhibits and more. We encourage you to learn more about Native American Heritage Month with the resources we have provided, and further explore opportunities to celebrate with others in your community.

ACKNOWLEDGE THE LAND

One of the ways you can honor Native Americans during Native American Heritage Month, and all year, is by learning more about the land you live on. Research what tribes once occupied the land and explore their unique histories.

This map is a great tool to learn about what Indigenous tribes occupied your neighborhood.
