At The Fortune Society, we understand that mental health is a key component of reentry, as mental health needs can act as a barrier to reentry for people impacted by the criminal legal system. The Better Living Center (BLC) seeks to address this by offering licensed behavioral health treatment. Through treatment, enrolled participants learn behavioral strategies to cope with the stressors of daily life and other tools for managing anxiety, anger and depression.
LaMont connected with Fortune over two years ago while still incarcerated. He was in search of a behavioral health program to treat his symptoms of depression and found that BLC appeared to be a great fit for his needs.
LaMont completed his intake interview while still incarcerated, and throughout the intake process, BLC staff worked closely with his supportive network and legal team to enroll him in the program. Upon his release from jail, LaMont was already enrolled in Fortune’s mental health services, and he was able to begin treatment almost immediately.
“One of the correction officers brought me a laptop, and I completed an interview with Marisa,” LaMont shared. “She asked me about my mental health struggles and background to figure out exactly what I needed help with. Together, we decided that therapy and medication were what I needed.”
Upon his arrival, LaMont was eager to begin treatment at Fortune. Marisa, the Clinical Director of BLC, extended a warm welcome, helping him feel more comfortable with the staff. At first, he met with a clinician weekly; as LaMont has continued treatment, he has gradually adapted his schedule based on need. He currently meets with his clinician, Gillian, bi-weekly over Zoom.
Along with his bi-weekly counseling sessions, LaMont receives his medication through Fortune. Once a month, he meets with BLC’s nurse, Lisa, to receive an injection of his medication. He appreciates the convenience of having his services in one location.
Since connecting with BLC, LaMont has developed emotional regulation and coping skills that significantly impact his daily life. As a college student, he has learned to manage stress more effectively and achieve greater balance. He utilizes writing and storytelling as tools for emotional regulation, offering a positive outlet for his emotions.
LaMont has made significant progress since starting counseling at BLC and is very proud of his achievements. Since beginning treatment, he has re-enrolled in college and is focused on rebuilding his relationship with his family. Mental health services at Fortune have helped LaMont regain his focus and provided him with the opportunity to prioritize his education and future while he receives the care he needs.
