Running to the Beat: Jaleel’s Commitment to Fortune

Running to the Beat: Jaleel’s Commitment to Fortune

10/29/2026

Fortune is excited to participate in the TCS New York City Marathon again on November 1. Among the 60,000 runners taking on the five boroughs is Fortune’s own Jaleel Poole. He will be joining the Fortune Flyers, who run every year and fundraise for Fortune’s programs, from housing and job training to health care. Jaleel joined Fortune a year ago as a Data Analyst focused on bringing data to life to better serve our clients and their needs. This year, he is bringing that same commitment to serving others to the marathon. Jaleel started running in 2025 and learned through a colleague – who has run a few marathons – that Fortune was looking for people to join the marathon team. Although he ran as a part of his track team in high school, he had never run a marathon before.

“It wasn't anything equivalent to what I'm doing now with long-distance running, "he said, “but it was kind of my first exposure to running and helped me build that relationship.”

Undeterred, Jaleel joined the Fortune Flyers and began his training regimen earlier this year. He trained for two half marathons in Brooklyn this spring before beginning his marathon training in June.

In addition to the half marathons, Jaleel has been running 20-mile long runs and 7-mile speed runs, designed to push his limits and build endurance. Earlier this month, he began tapering his training in preparation for the race.

Jaleel also finds inspiration in his coach's advice: “He encourages us and has encouraged us to think about how music can help fuel our ambition as runners, and for me, that's personal as well. I have a connection to both hip hop and running. I kind of think about my music helping me to narrate and paint my journey as I run the marathon.”

Beyond the music, Jaleel described a deeper motivator: “New York City’s been one of those cities that have been leading the charge in running, specifically for Black people, people of color who have kind of been, you know, maybe not in any legal or official way excluded.”

Being a part of this marathon connects Jaleel to a deep-rooted Black running community that intersects with art and music, particularly hip-hop. For Jaleel, running for Fortune means running for something bigger than himself by focusing on his community.

“I'm still learning that it's not all about us as individuals, as people,” Jaleel said. “We're engaging with this world; we're not distinct just because we decided to run a marathon. The world doesn't stop. These world issues and the problems in the world continue.

Running for Fortune is Jaleel’s way of showing that runners have a social responsibility to stay active in their communities. Through his gift of movement, he hopes to help others move forward socially and politically. He emphasized that this isn’t a journey he can take alone.

“I need other people along the way,” he said, “and I still need other people as I grow as a runner. The same thing applies to everyone who embarks on this journey of marathon training; you need other people.”

Ahead of cheering for Jaleel and all the Fortune Flyers on November 1, support them by helping them achieve their fundraising goals!
