Finding the Right Information: How Rob Decided to Get Vaccinated

03/04/2021

As more people become eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, access to accurate information is vitalBefore receiving his first dose of the vaccine, Rob, Fortune’s Vice President of Programs, made sure that he had the best information available.

He decided to consult his primary care doctor. Together, they discussed Rob’s hesitations about getting the vaccine and their safety and effectiveness.

“At first I had those hesitations, and then after speaking to my doctor and getting the reassurance from him, his advice was ‘yes,’ that I should when the time came,” Rob said. “That’s how I went about making my decision.”

When it comes to his health, Rob has always been proactive. He makes sure to get his flu shot every year. During the pandemic, Rob has been extra cautious, staying away from gatherings and practicing social distancing to protect himself and his family.

Even after receiving his first dose, Rob continues to use the same protections from COVID-19 as before.

“We’re not in the clear just yet,” he said. “Some of the guidance says you can still get infected, and you can infect others if you’re carrying the virus. I continue to follow all precautions.”

Rob is also hoping that his experience can help others, especially Fortune program participants and residents, feel more confident about getting the vaccine. When it comes to sorting through the misinformation about the vaccines, Rob acknowledges that it can be hard. He is hopeful that increased, accurate information coming from trusted organizations like Fortune will help dispel fears and increase inoculation rates among the formerly, justice-involved.

"I think that as a society we should be taking all of the efforts that we can to help inform everyone, especially those who come from vulnerable communities, or communities where they may not have all of the information,” he said. “My focus is really on those folks who unfortunately don’t have all of the information that they should.”

Since getting his first dose, Rob is looking forward to being fully vaccinated soon and for life returning to normal.

"It feels as though I’m taking steps with millions of others that are going to make [the pandemic] closer to being done,” said Rob.
