The Art of Freedom

The Art of Freedom

04/15/2026

Last week, The Fortune Society’s Creative Arts community hosted a screening of The Art of Freedom, a short film showcasing the creative talents of Fortune artists, in collaboration with the Queens World Film Festival. This powerful film explores themes of resilience and hope, illustrating how art serves as both a form of expression and a crucial pathway to healing.

The participating artists created the film as part of the Queens World Film Festival’s Filmmaker’s Bootcamp, a documentary production lab designed to equip creators with hands-on training in essential production roles. From camera operation to field production and editing, each artist actively participated in every stage, empowering them to narrate their unique stories through their artistry. By the end of the bootcamp, the featured artists had crafted a documentary they were proud to share with their community.

To premiere The Art of Freedom, the artists held a film screening paired with a Q&A panel, giving them the opportunity to reflect on their experiences during the bootcamp and share their thoughts on the completed film. Featured artists include Mark Hurston, Chasity Nunez, Demi Busby, Marcus Young, Norianne Rosado, Isis Nadene Richardson, and Meagan Bianca Betances.

Given creative freedom, each of the Fortune filmmakers took the documentary project as an opportunity to reclaim their own narratives and tell their stories from their unique perspectives.

During the panel discussion, Meagan expressed how the documentary allowed her to reflect on her past and recognize the exceptional growth she has experienced, both personally and as an artist, highlighting the transformative power of artistic expression.

“When we were filming this, I was actually going through a lot emotionally in my personal life,” Meagan shared. “But watching this, it made me proud of myself because the negative thoughts I had about how I was presenting myself were completely wrong. I’m proud of the woman I was, and I am proud of how I represent myself in this community.”

A particularly poignant moment in The Art of Freedom emerged when Mark, a featured artist and self-proclaimed documentarian, noted a newfound sense of worthiness that he discovered through his involvement in the film. This theme of worthiness serves as a central thread throughout the documentary, inviting the audience to consider who deserves to share their story and the essential role storytelling plays in healing and self-discovery.

The film and panel provided an important opportunity for reflection on both personal and artistic worthiness. Marcus, another featured artist, shared some of the challenges he faced in the past. Specifically, he spoke about members of his community who judged him and negatively impacted his self-esteem.

“Art is survival,” Marcus said. “I’ve been running for my life. I’ve been running away from situations, my childhood trauma, and going through homes and shelters. I was in a dark place. In my childhood, the people in my life that I held on to a pedestal held me down instead of uplifting me and giving me good feedback… they kept me in a bubble.”

Through art, Marcus has found a powerful tool to aid in his healing. For many, like Marcus and the featured artists in the film, art provides new outlets to reflect on the past while encouraging continued growth through new opportunities. The Art of Freedom showcases the resilience of the human spirit and the immense impact of creative expression through storytelling. As we celebrate the power of storytelling, we are reminded that our shared experiences can foster connection, understanding, and ultimately, freedom.
