The Fortune Society’s Family Services program offers various group and individual services designed to address the unique needs of formerly incarcerated parents and their families. Through parenting workshops, family law consultations, case management and other vital services, Fortune aims to empower participants with resources to strengthen their familial relationships.
Jennifer came to Fortune last year through the Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) program, and she was mandated to take several group workshops including Seeking Strength, Thinking for Change and a parenting workshop.
“One thing that I liked about the parenting workshop was that they were realistic,” Jennifer said. “We received feedback, but it was also about finding perspective about what works best for your own family. We talked about how to problem solve and find a solution without being violent or causing trauma for your children. It was good information.”
In each workshop session, the group facilitator Doris presents a topic for the group to discuss, including communication skills and healthy discipline. The participants in the group have the opportunity to share relevant personal examples while also offering each other valuable advice on how to handle certain situations or challenges.
As a mother to two boys for 13 years, Jennifer approached the parenting workshop with her own knowledge. However, she was most pleasantly surprised to have found such a welcoming and respectful community with the other mothers in the workshop. She found it helpful to receive outside perspectives on some of the challenges she faced with her family.
“We all understood each other and respected each other’s parenting styles,” Jennifer said. “We weren’t judged at all. To be able to see other mothers going through similar things was so helpful, especially in that environment.”
Jennifer also enrolled in the Women Rising program. There, she connected with women from various backgrounds and built a strong and supportive community she remains in contact with now.
“There were all sorts of us with different stories,” Jennifer said. “There were women like me going through the parenting workshop, and other young women who were just trying to adapt to life in general. Having a group like that, where we all respected each other and supported each other, is something I had never experienced.”
Overall, Jennifer has remained focused on building confidence, gaining new skills and establishing a strong foundation for her family. Through Fortune, Jennifer recently received her OSHA certification, and she is currently searching for a new job. On top of the parenting workshop, Jennifer’s goal was to build financial stability to provide a better life for her children. Although she was mandated to attend Fortune programming, Jennifer has made the most of her experience, and she is proud of the progress she has seen in herself since arriving last year.
