LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A Long Island City nonprofit got a $10 million gift from the philanthropist ex-wife of Amazon’s CEO as it fights against mass incarceration.
MacKenzie Scott, a novelist-turned-humanitarian and former spouse of Jeff Bezos, gave a multi-million-dollar grant to The Fortune Society, the Queens organization announced Monday.
“MacKenzie Scott has chosen to invest in Fortune and in the inherent potential in people, said JoAnne Page, President and CEO of Fortune, “regardless of their pasts.”
The gift comes as Gov. Kathy Hochul pushes for a rollback of recent bail reform laws that keep accused New Yorkers who have never been convicted of a crime, and are awaiting trial, out of jail.
It also comes as New York City experiences a crime spike that opponents of bail reform blame on the progressive policies.
Hochul’s proposal, which is a reversal of her previous stance, has the support of Mayor Eric Adams but has been condemned by advocates who argue the rollback will lead to increased incarceration of young Black and Latinx New Yorkers and worsen conditions on Rikers Island.
“It is too much, too soon, too many and we’re saying to Governor Hochul, all of the elected officials, that you need to de-carcerate,” Victor Pate, co-director of HALTsolitary Campaign, told CBSNews.
“You need to get people out of these prisons and jails.”
Fortune, founded in 1967, advocates for alternatives to incarceration and offers services to formerly incarcerated people, such as reentry aid and supportive housing.
Page said the cash comes at a vital moment in New York City’s history.
“This grant is an important acknowledgment…of our advocacy leadership in advancing justice and equity,” Page said.
“[It’s] especially important at this time where we are seeing pressure to roll back reforms and to return to a failed policy of mass incarceration.”
