Finding Success With Community Support at SRP

Finding Success With Community Support at SRP

07/24/2025

The Supervised Release program (SRP) at The Fortune Society provides community-based supervision and support for individuals with pending cases in the New York City Criminal or Supreme Court. Participants are mandated to attend regular check-ins with a case manager or clinical case coordinator to ensure their return to court, and they receive specialized support and referrals to other programs.

Kenneth was mandated to come to Fortune last year and, upon arriving at Fortune’s SRP office in the Bronx, he felt relieved and excited to begin a new chapter after his release. From the start, Kenneth was determined to turn his life around, and he has remained committed to his goals ever since.

“My life is more productive and positive now, and I like it that way,” Kenneth explained. “I’m trying to tap into my full potential, and I have been better off now that I’m surrounding myself with positive people instead of being around a bunch of negativity.”

Kenneth’s case manager, Victoria, had a powerful impact, and her continued support was instrumental in Kenneth’s success after his release. During their check-ins, Victoria ensured Kenneth stayed on track with court-related matters, including upcoming court dates and any other requirements.

More than just checking in each week, Victoria connected him with vital resources Kenneth needed to thrive. He shared that Victoria became an important resource for him, as someone he could go to with any questions or for guidance.

“Victoria is very resourceful and any resource that I could think of, she could help me find it,” Kenneth explained. “With all the staff here, I can go to them, and they’ll see what they can do to help with the best of their ability. They got me a phone, they helped me find a roof over my head, and I got food in my stomach every day.”

For Kenneth, finding housing was key in his reentry journey. Victoria helped him connect with a supportive housing provider in the Bronx, and they provide access to critical services like a food pantry and GED classes. Through his housing provider, Kenneth studied for and passed his GED exam, and he is now focused on pursuing higher education and finding a stable job.

Throughout his time at Fortune, Kenneth has taken advantage of the programs and services available to him. He is currently a participant in Fortune’s new Atlas HOPE program, and he is also enrolled in a training course for the Court Navigators program. Kenneth’s goal is to become a case manager and give back to others in his community. At Fortune, he plans to learn as much as possible before he begins his next chapter of pursuing a bachelor’s degree.

As Kenneth approaches his 25th birthday, he shared that connecting with Fortune and investing in his future has brought him peace. Victoria also shared that, having worked with Kenneth since his first day at Fortune, she has seen incredible growth and a total shift in his perspective. As he continues to make great strides toward success, Kenneth is immensely grateful to have such a supportive community standing behind him.

“Before, as soon as I woke up I was angry,” Kenneth shared. “Now I’m calm. I'm at peace with my life. And that's the main thing. I'm at peace right now, and it’s good.”
