The Fortune Society’s Statement on Robert Brooks and Aramis Fuse

Today marks the anniversary of the tragic death of Robert Brooks at the hands of Corrections Officers at Marcy Correctional Facility. Just two days ago, Aramis Fuse died on Rikers Island. These deaths, occurring in different facilities and years, reflect persistent and well-documented failures within New York’s carceral system.
The Fortune Society calls on Governor Hochul to sign the Jail and Prison Oversight Omnibus Bill (S8415/A8871) without amendment. The bill establishes consistent, independent oversight of jails and prisons statewide, strengthening transparency, access to information, and accountability mechanisms that are essential to preventing abuses and loss of life. This is essential in the prevention of further loss of life in a system that too often operates without sufficient transparency or consequence.
Our sympathies are with the families of Mr. Brooks, Mr. Fuse, and the many others who are spending this holiday season grieving the loss of a loved one to a carceral system that has too often failed in its duty to care. In their memory, and with an eye toward a safer and more just year ahead, we urge the Governor to take action now.
