The Fortune Society Statement on Governor Kathy Hochul’s State of the State 2022: A New Era for New York

The Fortune Society applauds Governor Hochul’s priorities relating to the criminal legal system and for recognizing that people involved in the justice system are part of the fabric of our communities, and must be treated accordingly.

In recognizing the importance of education and job training for people in prison and on parole, the Governor has displayed an unprecedented understanding of the challenges to re-entry and re-integration. Additionally, her commitment to restoring the Tuition Assistance Program to incarcerated individuals is absolutely monumental and long overdue.

There still are greater challenges ahead, but we look forward to collaborating with Governor Hochul and the State Legislature to pass measures such as Fair Chance Housing and the Clean Slate Act, which will jumpstart the re-entry process during incarceration, and other laws that support people involved with the criminal legal system.

We join the Governor in envisioning a day when our State is again a beacon to the world and one where access and opportunities are truly realized by all.
