Statement on the recently filed brief in Carter v. United States by The Fortune Society

The Fortune Society recently filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in Carter v. United States (No. 24-860).  The brief urges the Supreme Court to permit federal courts to consider granting compassionate relief to rehabilitated people serving sentences longer than those required by current federal sentencing laws.  The Fortune Society believes expanded early release strengthens society by enabling formerly incarcerated people to reunite with their families, contribute to the economy, and engage in civic life.  The Fortune Society is proud to offer the Supreme Court our insight on the positive societal impacts of early release and to demonstrate how organizations like The Fortune Society stand ready to help formerly incarcerated people successfully navigate reentry.
