President & CEO Stanley Richards Released a Statement on the Death of Sonya Massey

36-year old Sonya Massey, a Black mother of two teenagers, should be alive today. Yet she is another senseless fatality at the hands of police. Once again, we share as a society in the collective trauma of watching a preventable tragedy unfold on video.

We cannot have true public safety when events like this cause communities to distrust law enforcement, and when law enforcement is not trained to handle people who may be experiencing mental health crises with compassion, instead of escalation.

At Fortune, we always say that we are trying to build the world that we want to live in. In that world, Black and Brown lives matter. We mourn for Sonya Massey and our hearts go out to her family.
