Statement on Governor Hochul’s FY 2025 Executive Budget

The Fortune Society applauds the Governor’s proposals to expand transitional housing for people leaving prison and increase community-based mental health supports for some of our most vulnerable fellow New Yorkers. These are the kinds of investments that truly enhance community safety.  We also applaud Governor Hochul’s proposal to close five prisons across New York State.   

Every day, we bear witness to the short- and long-terms harms of mass incarceration. We hope the savings realized from these potential closures will ultimately be invested in those communities that have borne the brunt of our carceral policies.
