State Sen. Michael Gianaris pushes for New York bail system reform bill

No one should be in jail simply because they are not rich enough. We support Senator Mike Gianaris’ efforts to reform bail in New York. As Fortune President and CEO JoAnne Page says:

Daily, we see the devastating impact of pretrial detention on the lives of the individuals and families whom we serve. Presumed innocent, yet confined for the inability to meet the fiscal cost of bail, they are instead paying the human cost of incarceration. People’s housing, education, employment, and family unification is interrupted all while experiencing the trauma of incarceration. Feeling isolated and desperate, there is an enormous pressure to plead guilty in order to be released; this is not the way a justice system that is truly just and equitable should function. We strongly advocate for bail reform and a dramatic decrease in pretrial detention.
