In a letter to the editor, The Fortune Society’s President and CEO, JoAnne Page, responds to the New York Times’ May 21 editorial, “The Right Way to Fix the Prisons”:
There should be a systematic approach to prison reform regardless of political ideologies. Do not revisit failed policies, like the war on drugs. The outcome of that complete failure is that drugs are now cheaper, more readily available and of higher quality.
Likewise, with prison policy, incarceration should be used only when necessary, as a last resort when nothing else will work.
