New documentary champions theatre as a path to redemption inside and outside prison walls

A compelling new 40-minute documentary, Broadway, Bars, and Fortune, is urging a critical rethink of the justice system by spotlighting theatre and the arts as profound catalysts for change among formerly incarcerated individuals. From director and producer Shuvendu Sen, the film celebrates New York City’s The Fortune Society, one of the country’s leading reentry organizations, and the life-changing impact of its innovative theatre programs.

“Broadway has become an emotional point of rehabilitation,” Sen explained. “This film shows how theater, both inside and outside prison walls, can serve as a powerful healing tool—one that reduces trauma, crime, and recidivism.”

The documentary features The Fortune Society’s founder and Broadway personality David Rothenberg, alongside four formerly incarcerated individuals who have found a new path through acting: Philip Hall, Casimiro Torres, Ervin Hunt, and Vilma Ortiz Donovan. They share their raw, inspiring journeys of trauma, transformation, and successful reintegration into society, offering a deeply personal look at the power of artistic expression.

The film has garnered significant praise, with acclaimed actor John Savage (The Deer Hunter, Hair) stating, “I watched the film. It was a loving performance. Wonderful to share with everyone. Very, very important to hear everyone’s story. From the heart. The true words of a human being. Thanks for everyone’s participation. I love you all.”

Further enhancing the documentary’s message are appearances by Tony Award-winning actress Christine Ebersole, acclaimed actress and director Marcia Jean Kurtz, and Eric Krebs, founder of multiple NYC theaters, all providing expert insight into the transformative power of the arts.

Broadway, Bars, and Fortune has already received Official Selections in the prestigious New York Lift-Off Film Festival and The Hispanic International Film Festival, and recently screened at the iconic Hollywood Theater in Portland, Oregon. The film stands as a testament to the profound potential of creativity to heal, restore, and inspire.
