All [individuals incarcerated in New York state] will be given free tablets courtesy of a controversial private contractor that was awarded a lucrative phone service contract as part of the deal, state prison officials announced Wednesday.
The 50,046 [incarcerated individuals] can use the tablets — without internet capabilities — to file grievances against abusive officers, including those involving sexual abuse.
“It has the potential to be valuable,” said JoAnne Page, president of the Fortune Society. “If the New York State system could move to be more like the federal system in allowing people to communicate via email it would be a huge step forward.”
