City Council approves plan to close Rikers Island, replace it with borough-based jails
In a historic vote on October 17, New York City Council approved a plan to close Rikers Island by 2026 and replace it with safer, more humane facilities. This progress was made possible by the #CLOSERikers campaign, of which Fortune was a proud partner.
