Building Skills for Success with Employment Services

Building Skills for Success with Employment Services

05/22/2025

Bernard arrived at The Fortune Society in the summer of 2023 seeking employment assistance. He was eager to obtain professional skills to help him navigate the job search and find a stable job; upon his arrival at Fortune, Bernard was referred to Employment Services (ES).

With ES, Bernard found various services and programs designed to equip him with key professional tools. He enrolled in the three-week job readiness workshop, where he learned key interviewing skills like maintaining eye contact and calmly answering challenging questions, resume writing, professional attire, and more.

“I improved a lot during the workshop,” Bernard said. “That was very important, because I hadn’t done interviewing and those things in a long time. The workshop showed me how much I learned over time, even when I was incarcerated. I gained all kinds of skills that are helpful; for example, I learned I am a great communicator.”

Bernard appreciates that Fortune allowed him to explore several potential career paths. As an extrovert, he wanted a front-facing career. At first, he considered pursuing a career in social work, and he intended to learn more about that field from staff and other participants.

After completing the job readiness workshop, Bernard took on an internship opportunity at Fortune. Through his internship, he gained even more experience working in a professional environment and further cultivated the skills he gained in the workshop.

“My title was Employment Specialist Intern/Case Management intern, so I was doing a little bit of everything,” Bernard explained. “I learned computer programming because I did a lot of intakes. I also went to the job fairs, and most of the employees were impressed with my ability to work in those environments. I’m a big people person.”

Bernard ultimately pursued a job at Citi Bike; however, he attests that his time at Fortune taught him valuable skills that can be applied in any career field.

“Fortune helped me get different certifications and trainings, and they always want to see me succeed,” Bernard said. “Now, I'm not doing social work, but I am still taking on a job that is social. I'm getting hands on experience in some fields, learning skills from another. It all becomes helpful in the end.”

Bernard also attended some workshops with Digital Equity to strengthen his digital skills in preparation for the job search. He was eager to learn as much as possible while at Fortune to set himself up for success.

“We learned about Microsoft, Google and other programs,” Bernard explained. “I wasn’t familiar with any of them before the classes. Now, I know how to type up my resume on the computer. When I got to the internship with ES, what I learned in the workshops helped me be more efficient on the computer, as well.”

Overall, Bernard feels confident as he enters the workforce with the skills he gained from Fortune. He is deeply grateful for his time at Fortune, for the staff who continue to support him and the various opportunities he found here.

“I always tell people to come here,” Bernard said. “I have seen you guys help not only me, but other people become successful. Fortune is a great place for people who are just coming home.”
