States of Incarceration National Exhibition Launch & Conference

These national exhibition launch events brings over 500 people in 20 cities around the country who have created a traveling exhibition on mass incarceration together. These individuals have been directly affected by incarceration and will explore the history of incarceration in their own communities. The New York City exhibit, created by New School students in collaboration with The Fortune Society. will focus on Rikers Island.

Reforming Criminal Justice Through Public Health: A Symposium

This event, hosted by The Association for Justice and Health (AJAH) at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, will feature a performance of The Castle by The Fortune Society. Aimed at creating a national student platform to address incarceration through the lens of public health, this one-day conference will feature speakers and workshops for public health students from around the country.

Making SNAP More Accessible

As part of the City University of New York’s Urban Food Policy Institute’s Urban Food Policy Forum series, the CUNY School of Public Health is hosting this event to explore the respondents to explore the steps HRA is taking to make it easier for eligible New Yorkers to apply for SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps). It will feature New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) Chief of Staff Jennifer Yeaw and a panel of community respondents.

An impressive line-up of speakers will gather to honor U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder as they receive the New York Society for Ethical Culture 2016 Dr. Phyllis Harrison-Ross Public Service Award as “Champions of Change.” Speakers include Manhattan Borough President Gail Brewer, President of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill, and NBC Nightly News correspondent Harry Smith.
