The Vera Institute of Justice invites you to join us for the first installment of our summer film series, a screening of the award-winning Eugene Jarecki documentary, “The House I Live In.” From the dealer to the narcotics officer, the inmate to the federal judge, “The House I Live In” is a penetrating look inside America’s criminal justice system, revealing the profound implications of U.S. drug policy.  Stick around after the film for an engaging conversation with the filmmakers led by Vera’s Vice President and Research Director Jim Parsons.

Restorative Justice As A Tool For Transformative Change: Exploring Pathways To Dignity And Healing Continuing education course. This intensive introduction to restorative justice will blend examples from theory and practice to help participants develop an in-depth understanding of its origins, principles, and application. The course will also include an exploration of the role of and impact on survivors of crime with a particular emphasis on trauma and power. In addition, participants will study accountability for those responsible for crime through a restorative justice lens. These sessions will culminate in an examination of the potential and limitations of restorative justice to address mass incarceration and structural racism. Participants will engage in critical dialogue about these processes in the contexts of history, power, and social change. Throughout the course and in the final week in particular, participants will be given an opportunity to understand and practice some of the core mechanics of restorative justice by focusing on the method of peacemaking circles.
