The I-CAN (Individualized Correction Achievement Network) program is an innovative, jail-based community reentry program whose goal it is to reduce recidivism by 10% among men and women at the highest risk of committing new offenses after their release. The Fortune Society is privileged to be one of the organizations given the opportunity to deliver these services which are made available during incarceration and extend into the community for one year post-release.

These jail-based services include one-on-one comprehensive individual assessments and discharge plan sessions.

The sessions begin to explore the individualized need of each participant. They also include parenting skills, job readiness, and substance abuse relapse prevention group sessions which are focused on the individual needs of each participant.

In addition, robust cognitive skills development training is available to address the criminogenic thinking processes to develop healthy decision-making.

Each participant is linked to the community where we continue the process of clients reentering mainstream society and linking them to the numerous services, such as housing, employment, education, mental/substance treatment, and other resources that are desperately needed and that are imperative to their successful transition.

Last year, thanks to Fortune having contracted with several facilitators, 16 incarcerated individuals took four days of OSHA 10 classes on Rikers Island that are intended for workers and supervisors and anyone involved in plants, manufacturing, and health-care industries. On February 9, 2014, all 16 I-CAN participants received their OSHA 10 certificates and their OSHA 10 cards which make them employable.

In my opinion, an expansion of this program will have great success.
