The Fortune Society’s Board of Directors is a diverse group of leaders whose strategic planning and guidance are instrumental to the growth of the agency. In fact, The NYC Mayor’s Office recently praised Fortune’s “excellent policies and procedures for effective Board oversight and internal controls” and requested permission to share them with other providers.
Our by-laws require that at least half of our Board members are persons of color, and a minimum of one-third are formerly incarcerated and/or persons with substance abuse histories. These policies promote a level of cultural competency among our Board which helps ensure that Fortune continues to design and provide quality programs informed by our clients’ needs and experience.
Our full Board meets quarterly to review program progress and challenges, with committee meetings in the intervening months. Board members are required to attend 75% of the full Board meetings annually and to sit on at least one committee. In addition to their fiduciary responsibilities, they work closely with Fortune’s executive team to establish and oversee the overall purpose, plans, and policies of the agency.
