The Drop-In Center (DIC) provides services to address the immediate needs of men and women infected with HIV/AIDS.
Men and women infected with HIV and AIDS are being released from the Department of Corrections with a Metrocard and sent to Queens Borough Plaza at 2, 3 or 4am. Many of these individuals are homeless, do not have any form of income and are in need of medical care. The DIC works with DOHMH staff to coordinate and pick up these individuals the day of their release. They are then provided with a hot meal and taken to The Fortune Society, where clients’ immediate needs are identified during an initial assessment. DIC staff then refers each client to other Fortune Society programs or external partners in the community that can meet needs that may include: emergency housing, assistance with obtaining benefits, linkage to medical care or drug treatment. The goal of the DIC is to ensure clients are connected to services post-release, ensuring a seamless transition to the community.
