Latest Eco-Friendly Housing Complex Opens In Harlem – NY1 TV, 09/15/10
Harlem celebrated the opening of a new, green, affordable housing complex Wednesday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg was on hand to present ceremonial keys to some new residents of Castle Gardens. It offers permanent housing and on-site support services for former prisoners, and provides affordable apartments for members of the West Harlem community.
The Fortune Society’s new 114-unit building is part of the city’s commitment to provide affordable housing for more than a half million New Yorkers.
“It is the most ambitious affordable housing effort that any city has ever mounted. We started out with a goal, we raised that goal, we’re on schedule to achieve that goal. It will provide more housing for more people than live in Atlanta, Georgia,” said the mayor.
The eco-friendly project covers 110,000 square feet and cost $42 million.
