Scattered Site

Finding safe, affordable housing is difficult for formerly incarcerated people, particularly those who have been incarcerated for long periods. Most of our clients lack experience in securing and maintaining their own apartments and many landlords are reluctant to gamble on someone with a criminal record. Successful re-entry cannot happen without stable housing, so our staff works hard make sure that all of our clients have a safe place to call home.

Through our scattered site initiative, The Fortune Society develops relationships with area landlords and management companies in order to identify safe, affordable apartments for clients who are ready to move out on their own. When necessary, we even provide repairs to apartments before clients move in, as an incentive for landlords who might be hesitant to rent to our population. We then assist clients with move-in expenses, including utilities and security deposits, and make sure they’re linked to organizations in their community that can provide additional support.

In 2005, the Fortune Society was able to identify housing for 83 homeless clients.
